 Wolff is Back

For those of you who haven't checked the website in the last hour and aren't on our press release list, forward Josh Wolff is back. Wolff returns to KC after spending the last couple seasons at 1860 Munich in the 2.Bundesliga. Wolff, 31, played 80 games with the Wizards from 2003-2006, scoring 27 goals (T-5th in Wizards history) and tallying 20 assists (7th in Wizards history). Wolff currently has 52 caps and 9 goals for the U.S. National Team.

Glad to see Wolff back? Where do you see him fitting into the squad?

 Quotes KCW 1-0 RSL

They're a little late, but here they are. They're also available at kcwizards.com.

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS HEAD COACH CURT ONALFO
On the game
“It was an extremely hard-fought game. All I care about is three points. In this league it’s not always about how pretty it is, but at the end of the day it’s about getting three points. I’m extremely pleased with the win and we’re just going to build on it.”

On the sellout crowd
“It was excellent and I’m extremely pleased that we were able to get three points in front of them. They deserved it. We have excellent fans here and we want to continue to build onto our already wonderful fan base every day.”

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS DEFENDER JIMMY CONRAD
On the win
“It was great to get the monkey off our back. We’ve been looking for a win for a long time. Now we don’t have to worry about a winless streak or talk about it anymore. It’s huge for our confidence. There’s a real thin line between success and failure in this league and confidence is the real difference maker.”

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS GOALKEEPER KEVIN HARTMAN
On the win
“It was a great effort, and a great defensive effort. The guys worked really, really hard. Maybe it takes just a little bit of luck to break the losing streak we were on. We’re excited to get three points at home.”

On posting his League-leading 6th shutout
“I’d like to say that I had more of a roll in it. I think I had two tough saves but most of the saves were just routine. It really comes back to the fact that the guys really competed tonight.”

REAL SALT LAKE HEAD COACH JASON KREIS
On the game
“I thought we did all the necessary stuff that you need to to pick up a result on the road. I thought we were together, we worked very hard and we created enough chances to score that goal that would have taken us over the top. In the end, the quality, the touch wasn’t there and we paid for it.”

On the own goal
“It is very frustrating, I know that Tony will feel very outdone by it. When you put balls in dangerous spots, those things will happen. So I wouldn’t necessarily fault the final touch that put it in the back of the net, but why we gave that free kick away in such a dangerous spot in such a dangerous moment in the game.”

On Kansas City’s attack
“I thought that Kansas City came out very aggressively tonight. It is a fair result to be honest because they created the majority of the chances. It was a typical away game for us.”

REAL SALT LAKE GOALKEEPER NICK RIMANDO
On the goal
“It was a set piece and they did well to put it in the mixer. They got a lucky flick and it is an own goal and you just have to move on because those things happen.”

 Game Day #13

The Kansas City Wizards host Real Salt Lake tonight at 7 p.m. If you're reading this and haven't yet left, get out of the house and use the Parallel Parkway exit, as the exit onto State Ave is closed due to construction.

The gates just opened, and people are going crazy about Selena Gomez and Brandi Chastain. People were lining up around 4 p.m. to make sure they had a spot in line. She is now down signing autographs for the masses, with a huge line surrounding the concourse. Thanks for coming, Selena!

We'll be back after for notes and quotes. Let's go Wizards!

RailHawks vs Chris Brown RIGHT NOW

Don't know much about our U.S. Open Cup opponent for next Tuesday? Remember when Chris Brown played so many games in a row at forward for the Wizards? Well, you can get a look at each right now on Fox Soccer Channel. Brown's Portland Timbers are on the road at WakeMed Park in Cary, NC to take on the Carolina RailHawks. Do a little scouting and watch a former Wizard run around in USL1.

Game starts at 7 p.m. CT.

 Lauren Fowlkes QnA

Earlier this week, prior to the U.S. Women's U-20 team qualifying for the upcoming U-20 World Cup, defender/midfielder Lauren Fowlkes chatted with Hillcrest Road. The local product (Lee's Summit native and St. Theresa's graduate) talked about the trip to Mexico, her future plans (including WPS and the U.S. Women's National Team) and the future of Kansas City and Kansas City Wizards soccer. Special thanks to Lauren and Kate McMaster of U.S. Soccer for taking the time to chat with us.

Fowlkes

How has the trip to Mexico treated you so far? Are you getting some good sight-seeing done when you're off the field?

"The trip is going awesome. There's been some really great soccer and a lot of fun with the girls. We don't do a lot of sight-seeing but it's always fun to hang out with everyone. We went to see the great pyramid of cholula yesterday, so that was awesome."

How long have you been in the U.S. National Team program? What is it feel like to represent the USA?
"I was in a camp with the U-17s before, but January with the U-20s was my first time since then. It's always an honor to represent my country, and it brings such excitement every time i get to put on the U.S. jersey."

What is your favorite moment thus far with the National Team...either with the U-17s or U-20s?
"I'd say playing against Mexico last Sunday because of the atmosphere and the importance of these qualifying games. This is what we've been training for all spring."

Do you speak any Spanish? Could you understand what the fans were yelling at you?
"Yes, I do speak some Spanish, but I wasn't really focused on what the crowd was saying. I just know they were very loud."

What are your ultimate goals with the National Team?
"Ultimately I'd like to play for the full team, but right now I'm very focused on being part of this team and qualifying for the U-20 World Cup. I think if everything comes together, this team has a chance to win the World Cup, and I really want to make a difference on this team."

With WPS forming next year, would you like to continue playing soccer professionally after college?
"Yes, I would definitely want to continue playing soccer after college. I'm so excited that a women's league is coming back."

We're opening a brand new stadium in 2010 out where Bannister Mall used to be with 12 youth fields surrounding it, what do you think these world-class facilities will do for the soccer community in Kansas City?
"I think the fields will help to solidify and bring youth soccer in KC to the next level. I remember that growing up, a good practice field was hard to find and we always had to travel for tournaments. So, it will be amazing to have a facility of that caliber in Kansas City. It's going to help youth soccer so much."

The KCW Juniors, our youth development program, will likely include women's teams in the future. Would you have wanted to play for a club that was run by a professional team when you were growing up?
"I think that would have been a great option as a younger player, knowing that you'd have the financial support, great practice fields and great coaching staff supported by a professional team."

Our Juniors U-19 team won the regional final earlier today to qualify for nationals. How did your teams do at regionals?
"Of course i have memories from regionals with my club team every year. We always did really well, and those were some of the best memories of my youth soccer days."

What club did you play for back in the day?
"I played with the KC Dynamos for six years (I think) and we won a national championship when we were U-14... then I played with KCFC Alliance and then JB Marine (in St. Louis) and then I went back to the Dynamos. I practice with Dynamos when I'm at home. That's where my loyalty lies... with the Dynamos."

 KCW-Carolina Video Live Online

Sweet logo.

While we try to sort out TV for next Tuesday's Open Cup match (we're trying to get it on Metro Sports, folks), know that it will be available no matter what at www.USLLive.com. If the TV agreement can't be worked out in time, park yourselves in front of a computer screen in time for kickoff at 6:30 p.m. CT.

Coach Onalfo told reporters yesterday at the weekly press conference that Tuesday's game will feature a mixture of "traditional" and "nontraditional" starters, but as you know, we have many players who have seen significant time in MLS games this year, so the lineup should include a lot of familiar faces.

Don't forget, Selena Gomez and Brandi Chastain will be on hand tomorrow signing autographs. If either of those appeal to you and you don't have tickets already, make sure to get them fast. They're flying off the racks. It should be a good game, as RSL comes in red hot and the guys look to redeem themselves from the last home outing. Both Coach and Jack Jewsbury expressed disappointment and embarrassment in the last home performance during yesterday's presser, and both indicated the team is eager to put on a good show tomorrow night.

 Brandi Chastain Coming Saturday/Verano MLS

Hey everyone, hope you're enjoying your Thursday afternoon. It's a pretty one out there. If you are walking around KC and see one of those green "Ink" magazine dispensers, go ahead and pick one up and turn to page 73. There you will see the printed version of Cherryh Butler's column about the trip to practice a week or so ago and a picture taken by Hillcrest Road himself. Thanks for the credit, Ink staff.

Many of you have seen that former U.S. Women's National Team star Brandi Chastain is in town this week hosting some youth-soccer clinics. Well, Ms. Chastain will be at our match on Saturday signing autographs starting at 6 p.m.

Today was the Verano MLS media day out at Swope. Around 100 kids from all over the KC area were there to take part in the no-charge clinic. For the next month, assistants Kris Kelderman and Dave Tenney will lead the sessions from 1-3 p.m. on Field 3 at Swope. Today, Coach Onalfo and Roger Espinoza were on hand to help out. Here are a couple of pictures. Check out more later tonight or tomorrow at kcwizards.com.

 Onalfo Story/Youngster Visits Practice

Read the following article from ESPN Soccernet's Kristian Dyer about Coach Onalfo's successful battle with cancer when he was 24 years old.

Today, another cancer survivor, Westin Funk came out to practice at CommunityAmerica Ballpark with his mother and two friends. Westin got some points from midfielder Kerry Zavagnin during practice and then the rest of the guys came over and signed autographs for him and his friends. Westin was named as one of the Boys of the Year by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Hope you had fun, buddy.

Westin watches practice with midfielder Kerry Zavagnin.

Goalkeeper Kevin Hartman signs for Westin and friends.

Westin and his friends pose with their autographs.

All smiles from Westin and company.

 Bring on Carolina/U-19s Win

We have now learned our opponent for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16. The Carolina RailHawks defeated Real Maryland 1-0 last night on their home turf. Kansas City will travel to Carolina for a 6:30 p.m. CT match-up with the USL-1 side.

Midfielder Kerry Zavagnin and defender Michael Harrington will be in familiar territory, playing less than 30 miles away from the University of North Carolina, where each attended school. Carolina formed its USL-1 team in 2007 and qualified for the semi-finals of the U.S. Open Cup in its first-ever appearance. New England Revolution, the eventual champions, bounced Carolina before defeating FC Dallas for the silverware.

In other news, the U-19s defeated Scott Gallagher Soccer Club of St. Louis 1-0 to capture the Midwest Regional Championship. Just got a text about the win, will have more details coming later this afternoon.

 Ask a Question, Round 2

Kerry and The Law discuss the script during a PSA shoot earlier this year.

We started off the fan question feature last week with double duty from Captain Kansas City and Jack Jewsbury. The answer segments ran a little long, so we're going to cut it down a bit this week. Midfielder Kerry Zavagnin, just 92 minutes away from becoming the Wizards all-time minutes played leader, will be the victim this week. Want to know about Kerry's high school football kicking career? Interested to know about his fiance? Ask and you shall receive.

 Get Out the Vote, Posse

Hello Hillcrest Road faithful, Jimmy Conrad is just shy of an MLS First XI spot based on fan voting, so let's rally up the troops and push him over the top. In the report released today at MLSnet.com, it lists Conrad in fourth place among defenders (MLS All-Star formation is usually a3-5-2), just behind Jim Brennan and Marvell Wynne of TFC.

Read the story here, then go vote for Jimmy and the rest of your Wizards here. Conrad has taken part in the last four MLS All-Star games, playing 90 minutes in three of them.

Thanks Fans! Passback a Big Success

Thanks to your generosity, we collected over 500 pieces of soccer equipment at the June 14 game to donate to Don Bosco Center! The wonderful people of St. Pius X High School also chipped in over $1000 that will help Bosco Center get its soccer program off the ground. Great job Wizards fans! Special thanks to people from St. Pius X for their generous donation.

 Busy Weekend Ahead

Our Juniors are still undefeated at Regionals, and we'll still be getting you more details soon. We're currently 3-0-3, and all three teams have the ability to move out of the group stage with the correct results today. Go get 'em, kids!

Fun day of soccer yesterday, as the U.S. wrapped up a 9-0 aggregate victory over Barbados and Spain broke two jinxes (vs Italy in major tournaments and penalty shootouts on June 22) to advance to the semifinals of Euro '08. What a tournament its been, with Turkey and Russia representing the surprise semifinalists. Germany, as always, has been solid in a major tournament and Spain stands two games from Euro glory for the second time.

This weekend will be a busy one in Kansas City, as we play Real Salt Lake on the same night as Red, White and Boom out at Sandstone (can I call it that again?) and the Royals host the Cardinals at the K. Don't forget about Selena Gomez if you've got kids who are fans of the Disney Channel. She'll be on hand to sign autographs before the match. Brandi Chastain is also in town this week and may make an appearance at the match. Bring out your friends for a fun night at CAB and The Legends.

 0-0 Draw With TFC/KCW Juniors 2-0-1

Glad to get a point on the road, would have loved to put one in the net. Hartman records League-high 5th shutout of season and record 72nd of his career. Good chances early (Sealy twice) and late (Victorine's just-miss off Morsink pass, Leathers miss left from Victorine pass). Guevara scares us again (great save on that near-post blast, Kevin).

Though Hillcrest Road was unable to attend, the watch party up in Weston went well by all accounts. We'll get some more details to you soon (likely a Cotton post), but I heard the place was packed and the beer was good. Great to hear. So what's the name gonna be fans? Post some ideas you've had here in the comments section if you'd like.

The KCW Juniors did well today, going 2-0-1 in regional matches in Rockford, Illinois. U-16s earned 2-2 tie. U-17s won 6-1. U-19s won 1-0. Details on that coming soon. Well done lads!

Fan Q&A With Conrad and Jewsbury

Our friend Andrew Wiebe of KU and American Soccer Daily helped out by recording the video Wednesday after practice. Check out the answers from Jimmy Conrad and Jack Jewsbury.

 Video Has The Proof/TFC/Beer

So I told you about Bryan Truta and Cherryh Butler's visit to practice the other day seemingly 100 times now. Well, they just keep putting up more stuff about it! Both today posted the video at their respective websites. Check out Truta's blog here and the ink front page here.

The guys depart today for Canadia (spelled wrong on purpose) for the second match-up with TFC of 2008. We're 2-1-1 all-time against the Reds, our first loss coming back on April 26 when Amado Guevara reminded everyone why he was the MLS MVP not too long ago.

Don't forget about that little watch party we're hosting up in Weston, MO to taste our new blend of cask-conditioned beer and get the naming process started. This stuff will be sold at Hillcrest Road, the stadium, in a couple years. See the graphic below if you don't yet know the details of the watch party.

 Cherryh Butler Chimes In

Newfound friends

I wasn't kidding when I said Ms. Butler was a natural! She's already posted over at inkkc.com about today's visit to practice. Cherryh got after it with some racy comments that I'll let you read directly from her. Hillcrest is blushing.

 Bryan Truta QnA

So, Mr. Truta of 105.1 Jack FM stuck around after practice to knock the ball around with KZ and Cherryh Butler, face of Ink Magazine. Hillcrest Road caught up with him afterward for a quick question/answer session about the experience, the upcoming media game and his time in the Cauldron last weekend. See his blog about the experience here. See his answers from today here:

Bryan Truta, it’s a pleasure to have a superstar such as yourself here at Wizards practice. What did you think of your first experience here at Swope Park at the Wizards practice?

Well, it took me back to a more innocent time when I used to play soccer myself. The field’s beautiful and it’s a great day out here. I learned a lot, and I feel confident in my skills for the media game July 10 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

I know you worked with Kerry Zavagnin after practice. What exactly did he work on with you? What kind of pointers did you get?

Well basically I learned out to juggle the ball...more to the fact that I can’t. I also learned how to head the ball and basically just kick.

What are your strengths and weaknesses as you break down your game heading towards the third-annual media game on July 10th?

I’d say a strength of mine is that at least I know the game. I’m a fan of the game and I played for a while. My weakness pretty much is that I despise running, so that’s going to be a problem.

Do you have a special training regiment that you’re planning in preparation for the game in three weeks?

Absolutely. I’m going to have a Diet Sunkist every morning and try to have one of those big cinnamon rolls out of the snack machine. Other than that, it’s basically a regiment of a lot of soccer on TV and no running.

I know you were in the Cauldron the other night for the first time. What did you think of that experience? What did you think of CommunityAmerica Ballpark?

It was unreal. The ballpark had a great atmosphere, and the Cauldron, it really felt like I was just in one of those games in Europe. I thought maybe at some moment I would be trampled or somebody would throw some sort of bodily fluid on me. It was great.

 Practice Report

Holy cow, Hillcrest Road made it out to practice today. What a lovely day it was. Sunshine and warm weather abounds. The U-19 Juniors were out training at the beginning of practice, with Technical Director Peter Vermes personally coaching the session. A group of players from O'Hara High School were out to watch the practice and seemed very impressed by the shooting display put on from long range by our midfielders during one drill.

The guys started out with conditioning as usual, then split into two groups. A group of midfielders (Colombano, Morsink, McMahen, Marinelli, Miles, Jewsbury, Pore, Watson I hope I'm not forgetting anyone) went with Assistant Dave Tenney to the bluegrass field and practiced their long-range shooting. The remaining players worked on defensive shape and counterattacks on the Bermuda field.

After that, the players joined together for an 11-v-11 scrimmage on the Bermuda field. A few reserve players remained on the Bluegrass field for finishing practice, and equipment manager Alex Paepke took his turn providing service. Lance Watson buried a couple of good opportunities that Paepke served up.

After practice concluded, Kerry Zavagnin stuck around to kick the ball with Bryan Truta of 105.1 Jack FM and Cherryh Butler of Ink Magazine (www.inkkc.com). Cherryh was a natural, Bryan (supposedly a former player) was a little rusty. Expect a Truta QnA, video and pics from that little session shortly. Truta, already a Wizards fan, and Butler were extremely impressed with practice and are very much looking forward to participating in the third-annual media game on July 10. Come out to see them play!

Watson Back to Health/Star Euro Coverage

Hillcrest Road is pleased to report that for the first time this season, Lance Watson is not on the injury report. He is back to full training and will be working himself back into game shape over the next few days/weeks. Glad to have you back, friend!

For those of you who don't visit the Wizards page at kcstar.com often, you might want to start. They've had very good coverage of Euro 2008 from Pete Grathoff, Matt Schofield and Samuel Siringi. These last two guys aren't "sports" reporters, but they love the beautiful game and are taking their own time out to post about the daily happenings across the pond. Thanks guys!

Speaking of Euro 2008, watch some highlights from Holland. These guys are amazing right now, aren't they?

 Fans, Ask a Question!

Here at Hillcrest Road, we are always trying to find new ways to keep you connected to the boys in blue. With that in mind, we are proud to introduce a new video feature that we hope will give you even more insight into the lives and personalities of our players. Each week, Hillcrest Road will pick two members of the organization and give our readers the chance to ask them just about anything. Want to know what players do in their off time? Who is the team Halo 3 champion? Most self-absorbed? Have a question about tactics or life in Major League Soccer? All you have to do is ask. Hillcrest Road will track down the answers.

This week's featured players will be Jimmy Conrad and Jack Jewsbury. Please post your questions in the comments section. We hope we can get to all of them, but depending on your response we may have to choose the best and brightest. Remember to keep them semi-appropriate, but don't be afraid to ask if it is something you really want to know!

 Happy Tuesday

Greetings Hillcrest Road faithful. Don't forget to pose a question for Jimmy and Jack above. They will be asked tomorrow after practice and then posted here at Hillcrest Road afterward. By all accounts, practice was an intense one today and featured some post-practice "conditioning". The guys got after it.

The KCW Juniors, fresh off a successful Kansas State Cup campaign two weeks ago in which the U-16, U-17 and U-19 teams were victorious, is in the midst of the tryout process right now. The U-13 roster has already been decided. See it here. U-15 through U-18 teams will be chosen tonight and tomorrow. See those call-back lists here. For all your KCW Juniors information, visit www.kcwizards.com/kcwjuniors.

Had a chat with former Wizards goalkeeper Chris Konopka today. Chris says he's doing well. The season runs the same time as MLS, so he's in full-swing with Bohemians. He says their starting goalkeeper, Brian Murphy, is a talented 25-year-old who is a joy to train with. The weather in Dublin was great the first two months he was there, but has been overcast and rainy since. He wished all involved with the Wizards the best and says he's keeping track of the team. Good chatting with you Chris. Enjoy Bohs!

 Reminders!

Don't forget about the Wizards in Weston event this weekend. Make sure to get ahold of Adam Meloan soon (ameloan@kcwizards.com or 913.387.3440) to RSVP and save your place. Here's a link to the last post about it and the flyer image is again included above.

The M&I Bank Father's Day promotion was a very successful one, so much so that M&I has decided to extend the offer for the next home game at 7 p.m. CT on Saturday June 28 against Real Salt Lake as well. Go to www.WizardsThankDads.blogspot.com to secure a late Father's Day gift for your favorite padre.

 SELLOUT CROWD, 3-0 Loss

Well, the crowd was incredible. We fell 3-0 tonight to Columbus on goals from Marshall and Moreno (2). To all of you out at the park, a wholehearted, THANK YOU. The stands were packed, you were loud, and it was an excellent atmosphere. The new Ink Pavilion kicked off behind the Piojo banner in centerfield, and was a success. Pictures of that coming soon.

Don't forget about the Reserve match tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. at Swope Park. Come watch the Reserves, who are 3-0-2 this season in MLS RD play.

Tonight, Zavagnin became the second player in Wizards history to surpass the 20,000 minutes played plateau for the Wizards. Garcia was the first and is the only person ahead of Zavagnin on the team's all-time minutes played list. He stands as the player with the 7th most minutes played for the same team, behind: Cobi Jones, 25,157 (Galaxy); Jaime Moreno, 22,167 (D.C. United); C.J. Brown, 21,750 (Fire); Kevin Hartman, 21,735 (Galaxy); Jason Kreis, 20,290 (Dallas); Nick Garcia, 20,158 (Wizards); Kerry Zavagnin, 20,001 (Wizards).

 Beer, Wings and Things

Greetings all, how about the love we got from SF at The Offside Rules for our new beer idea. Thanks SF. You're my boy. That "BEER" can is great.

Speaking of beer and other fun stuff, tomorrow after the match, we're hosting an after party at the Hooters right across the street. Hop on by for some post-game entertainment and hang out with your favorite Wizards.

 Don't Forget!

A couple of reminders for your Friday morning. One, we play AT HOME tomorrow. Crazy stuff, I know. Two, we have a handful of free tickets left for Father's Day gifts over at www.WizardsThankDads.blogspot.com. Simply post a comment there about your dad and why he deserves one free ticket. All additional tickets will be available for purchase at the group rate, courtesy of our friends at M&I Bank. MAKE SURE that you put your contact info in your comment so we can get ahold of you.

Also, don't forget about TJ Widbin and his desire to head to Kenya this summer/fall. He's still some money short. Check out the QnA we did with him here at Hillcrest Road June 2. You can send donations to us at the info listed on that post, or head to his blog to donate via PayPal.

Another charity drive is being put on by the good folks in The Cauldron. They have teamed up with All American Indoor and the US Soccer Foundation’s Passback program to collect used soccer equipment tomorrow at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. All donors will receive a special edition T-shirt. Bins will be placed inside Gate C.

Captain Kansas City Sounds Off With Cool Offer

Jimmy C is at it again. Over at AthletixNation, Jimmy posted his latest blog. In it, he compares Paul Pierce's (one of my favorite players) "miracle" injury comeback from Game 1 to soccer players who get chastised for "diving" and offers up a little something something to KC fans. Check it out here and pose a question to win Jimmy's special offer.

hot stuff.

 Wizards in Weston

Some of you have seen some info about a special Wizards watch party taking place next Saturday. If you haven't already heard, it's going to be pretty neat. We are partnering with Weston Brewing Company to tryout a new Wizards-specific beer that is brewed in a traditional cask-conditioned method. Beer will be free until the first 10 gallons are gone, then more will be available for $2 a pint.

Buses will leave at 12 p.m. (noon) from the 810 Zone locations on the plaza and in Leawood. The party will then start at O'Malley's Irish Pub in Weston, MO. The cost is $12 per person and includes transportation, food and beer until the 10 gallons are gone.

 Making of a Soccer Ball

While skimming through du Nord, something you should do every day if you call yourself a soccer (football) fan, I came across this awesome YouTube video produced by adidas about the making of the EUROPASS ball, the official game ball of the EURO 2008 competition. This ball is very similar to the design of the current MLS game ball, aside, of course, from the external markings. Take a look at the YouTube and then read this post at analogue. Very cool stuff.

 Top Gun/Crashing the Cauldron

Greetings ladies and gents. For those of you who haven't seen it, we did some filming yesterday for some upcoming videos of our guys re-enacting your favorites 1980's movie scenes. The Offside Rules had a spy at the event, and posted this. Check it out. Great stuff SF. Jimmy had your same Freddy Mercury comment during the shoot.

In other news, those of you who do your cheering from the Cauldron will have company this weekend. PR guru Dave Borchardt has lined up some media members to join you guys for some standing, yelling and drinking. Make sure you have a warm welcome ready for the following media members:

1. Scott Parks from news radio 980 KMBZ

2. Natalie Puhr (and possibly others from Q104 morning show)

3. Bryan Truta from 105.1 Jack FM

4. Steven St. John, Nate Bukaty and the guys from "The Border Patrol" on Sports Radio 810 (will spend part of the game on the berm and part in the Cauldron)

5. Justin Unell, Sports Producer for Channel 41/38 the Spot

Let's show these people how Wizards fans get down, so they can show the rest of Kansas City.

 Selena Gomez YouTube

So I was just reading past posts, and I realized I have been seriously neglecting pics/vids for the past few days. MY BAD! So, to spice things up a little, I thought I'd throw out a Selena Gomez backstage video from her show The Wizards of Waverly Place. As you know, she's coming to town June 28th to attend our match against Real Salt Lake and sign autographs/take pictures before the game. If you have youngsters that are big into Disney Channel, make sure to bring them that night.
Enjoy:

It Was a While Back But...

Remember all those many days ago when we had a home game? Well, one of those home games happened to coincide with another certain sporting event. Trying to accomodate our fans who enjoyed both events, we moved the game time around. There were several comments posted here and on Big Soccer and other places. Some favored our decision, and some were upset. Many opposed said this was "minor league." Well, folks, it certainly is not. The Boston Red Sox have moved the start time of two of their games to allow fans to make it home in time to watch the Celtics take on the Lakers later that night in LA. See the press release here and the story on MLB.com here.

Vamos Wizards! Let's beat Crew!

 KCSoccerStore.com Offer

Hello everyone, just walked out of the office of Merchandising Guru/VP Jacques Tournoy, and he gave me some pretty good news. Season ticket holders will receive a special 15 percent discount off anything purchased through the site for a limited time. While we can't post the promo code here, he told me to have any STH interested give him a call at (913) 387-3407 or shoot him an email at jtournoy@kcwizards.com

I know we've got some excellent merch available, so get ahold of our favorite Dutch Wizards associate and get all the details. Speaking of Dutch, how about Jacques' former home demolishing Italy today? Great work to the oranje.

 KCW top KCB 5-1

It seems that every time it rains before a Reserve match, the skies clear just in time for the game. The same was true again in the Kansas City derby, of sorts. The Wizards prevailed 5-1 through goals from Trujillo (2), Colombano, Victorine and Kraus. The Brass scored the first goal of the season against the KCW Reserves in an exhibition. Lucas Rodriguez tallied late in the first half for the visitors.

Scoring summary:

19th minute- Trujillo played the ball wide into space for Sealy on the right flank before spinning and making a back-post run. Sealy took a touch then lofted a cross into the area for Trujillo. The pass was slightly behind Trujillo, but he was able to spin in mid-air and hit the ball with a back heel that went just inside the far post, completely freezing the goalkeeper. 1-0 KCW.

29th minute- Colombano worked a long give-and-go with Marinelli, starting near the midfield circle and overlapping to the right. Marinelli laid the ball on the ground behind the defense and into the area for Colombano, who ran onto the pass and crushed a right-footed blast inside the near post from a tough angle. Eloy is deadly in these reserve exhibitions. 2-0 KCW.

33rd minute- Colombano created the next play, whipping in a cross from near the end line on the right for Trujillo at the back post. Trujillo calmly brought the ball down and around a defender in the same motion and tapped home from inside the six-yard area. 3-0 KCW.

38th minute- Trujillo had the ball near the end line, but two defenders converged. He calmly laid the ball back for Victorine near the top of the box. Victorine's first-time shot clipped a defender on the way by and settled inside the near post. 4-0 KCW.

42nd minute- The Brass recorded the first exhibition goal against our Reserves this year. Bryan Perez played a long ball out of midfield behind the KCW defense for a streaking Lucas Rodriguez. Rodriguez took a nifty first touch down into his path and lofted the ball just over an onrushing Kronberg for the score. 4-1 KCW.

73rd minute- Chance Myers collected a ball near the top of the penalty area and slid square for Michael Kraus just inside the area. Kraus controlled and ripped inside the back post for the final tally. 5-1 KCW.

Lineups:

KCW-Kronberg (Pardo 46), Myers, McKenzie, Wahl, Marquess, Colombano (Miles 63), Morsink (Espinoza 61), Victorine (McMahen 46), Marinelli (Souter 61, Morsink 75*), Trujillo (Pizarro 46), Sealy (Kraus 61)

*Souter took a knock shortly after entering, so Morsink went back on in his place after leaving for a sub.

KCB- Adam Sokolowski (Andy Fitzpatrick 55), Kevin Shrout (Ryan Hennessy 46), Calvin Clark, Josh White, Luke Gorczyca (Miguel Gutierres Rodrigues 55), Bryan Perez (Manny Tovar 47), Michael Thomas (Brian Wurst 55), Jordan Raybould, Lucas Rodriguez (Michael Clayton 46), Levi Coleman (Haggai Leboo 46), Austin Williams (Garrett Webb 46)

 Reserve Game This Morning

Game is on. While it's a little wet, no lightning is in the area, so KC Wizards vs KC Brass at Swope Park is a go.

How about that USA game last night? Tim Howard did his best Kevin Hartman-from-RSL-game impression in the first half, making seven saves including a few of the spectacular variety. Landon and Freddy looked very dangerous late in the match, Guch hit the crossbar and Pablo got a phantom red. All-in-all, the match was a fun one to watch. Hopefully the 78,000+ that saw it live told five friends each to go watch the replay. Hopefully, again, ESPN makes it an instant classic. It was definitely deserving.

See you guys at the reserve match. Hillcrest out.

 Quotes From RSL Match

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS HEAD COACH CURT ONALFO
Overall thoughts on the match:
“I thought our team competed very well. They were a little tired, having played a lot of minutes on Wednesday in a game we put a lot into. I thought Kevin Hartman had a great game in goal. I thought we played well for the first 30 minutes; the last 15 [minutes of the first half] we really didn’t have the energy to compete with them, and the second half was pretty much even.”

On what changed between the first and second half:
“It is just fatigue. We came out and pressed them. We were hoping to get a goal early, which was our game plan. When you exert that kind of energy on the road, and you don’t decide to sit back and try to press them, you expend energy. The hope is you get a goal, and then you can drop back and look to counter, but we weren’t able to score a goal and they started to get in the game, as they should when they are playing at home. There are going to be stretches when you have to endure pressure. I was pleased with the group effort and the will of the guys to work for each other and not give up any goals.”

On some of the Wizards play coming off of injuries:
“As we move forward I think it is a real positive that Davy Arnaud gets some more minutes. We are trying to work him back into playing fitness through playing games so we can get him up to speed. As we continue to progress, we will continue to get better. Sasha Victorine and Carlos [Marinelli] have struggled a lot with groin injuries; getting them back to health is good, but we need to get them some good training before they can really be able to contribute for more than 45 minutes or so.”

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS MIDFIELDER DAVY ARNAUD
Thoughts on the game and playing on the Rice-Eccles Stadium field-turf:
“We battled hard for each other tonight. I don’t think it is going to be the prettiest game anytime you play on field-turf, it is just the way it is. [Real Salt Lake] has been good at home all year. The positive thing is we came out and battled and scrapped, and we shut them out, which is good, and we got a point on the road, which isn’t bad.”

On the change of momentum in the last 15 minutes of the first half:
“We started out pretty well. I thought we were moving the ball well and we created a couple of chances. For whatever reason, we kind of got out of rhythm in the last part of the first half. Credit to [Salt Lake], they did well. For whatever reason after that first 30 [minutes] we just couldn’t find the rhythm we had to start with.”

On getting a point on the road:
“What is really important is that we really worked hard together, and that is something we really tried to establish – to be a hard team to play against. If we have that mentality, especially now that we are going back home after we have been on the road for six games, it is really going to benefit us. A point on the road is a point on the road, especially against these guys who have been really good at home.”

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS DEFENDER/ CAPTAIN JIMMY CONRAD
On the play of Real Salt Lake:
“I think Salt Lake does a pretty good job of pressuring the ball; if you can get past that first line of pressure and kind of get running at their backs, I think that is where you can be dangerous. I think we did that a few times tonight, but it didn’t turn into anything, and that was disappointing on our end. I thought we did a better job in the second half of limiting their chances. We just have to make more of our opportunities.”

On the Rice-Eccles field-turf:
“What is funny about turf is that every turf field plays a little different. You hit long balls, sometimes they chuck straight up and sometimes they skip out of bounds. You just got to be ready for the unexpected out here. That is what turf does though – the ball doesn’t slow down on turf when it is on the ground. We have turf to practice on at home, but the turf here is still a different turf than we practice on at home. Both teams are playing on it though.”

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS GOALKEEPER KEVIN HARTMAN
Overall thoughts on the result:
“I thought our guys battled well tonight. We were able to get a shutout, so hopefully that helps our confidence defensively a little bit. We have to continue to try to be more effective offensively, and get more chances. We were able to keep our shape in the second half, and they were not necessarily able to get as many chances as they did in the first half. Possession was good for maybe the first 25 minutes of the game. The second half when Carlos Marinelli and Sasha Victorine were on the field helped. I think they are two guys who value possession a little more.”

On grabbing the away point:
“We always want more points, but we have to keep things in perspective. It was a six-game road swing. If we had won tonight we would have got seven points from six road games, which is not the worst thing in the world. Fortunately we were able to come out with five points.”

On his save on RSL striker Kenny Deuchar:
“We knew Deuchar was their most dangerous attacking player in terms of flighted balls into the box. It is frustrating that on the first corner kick he gets an opportunity from ten yards out. I might have laid into some guys at that point. It was a team effort to keep it out of the goal though.”

 Notables From RSL Match

Well, we got a point, so that's a plus. Scoring on Davy's first-half crossbar job or Kerry's last minute blast would have made the evening VERY nice. Hartman was great in goal, tying a season high with seven stops on the night. On a personal note, good job to Davey B. on the Metro Sports pre and post game shows.

Thoughts on the game? Post them below.

 Good Win Last Night

Quite the exciting game last night, wasn't it? As you've seen by now, 5,228 screaming fans attended the match last night at the Shawnee Mission North District Stadium. Read Bob Luder's nice write-up on the night here.

Below are the post-game quotes for those that aren't on our press release list. Some good ones from Coach, Kronberg and Morsink. It was Kronberg's first career start in a major first-team match. All other appearances have been in the Reserve Division or friendlies like last week's New Mexico Cup. Kronberg is undefeated this year at 5-0-2 in all competitions.

We are now 2-2 all-time in penalty kick shootouts. We're 1-1 in Open Cup competition and 1-1 in MLS postseason play.

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS HEAD COACH CURT ONALFO
On the game…
“I thought the first fifteen minutes it took us a long time to get adjusted to the field surface, and then we scored the goal and took the momentum. I thought we were very good and then we gave away too easy of a goal, and that is unacceptable. We let them right back in the game. I was very disappointed with that and I let the team know that at halftime. And then again we had a defensive lapse and an easy goal and we were down 2-1. We basically decided to go with a 3-4-3 after that, and it still wasn’t working. So we went for broke and about the 82nd minute we took a chance and we played with 3-3-4 and we played with four forwards and it paid off.”

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS GOALKEEPER ERIC KRONBERG
On his first career start with the first team…
“It was my first time in goal for first team. It’s exciting for me, you know, I’ve never had a shot, and this is my big opportunity. I was a little nervous beforehand, but once the whistle blows, you realize you are on the field, and it is just like any other day. As soon as the whistle blew, I was ready.”

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS MIDFIELDER KURT MORSINK
On the game…
“I think the most important thing for our team was we came from being 2-1 down. We scored a late goal, and we fought through with ten men. We fought through it; we came away with three points; and we advanced. Our goal is to always get three points and to always be aggressive and to stay sharp on defense. We want to get three points on the road this weekend at Real Salt Lake and then come back home in front of our great home supporters.”

 U.S. Open Cup Game Day

First, take a look at Bob Luder's piece on midfielder Davy Arnaud and his long road back to health. Arnaud is expected to play at least 45 minutes tonight against Colorado. He looked very strong against Municipal Saturday.

Former Wizards defender Jose Luis Burciaga Jr. is in town with Colorado and also back to health. He hopes to play tonight. As most of you know, Jose has been active in match-ups between KC and COL. He scored a goal for COL in his first game against the Wizards after an off-season trade and was red carded as a member of the Wizards in his last match against Colorado last season.

Don't forget, season ticket holder use Special Game A tonight and can use their corresponding parking pass to park adjacent to the field at Shawnee Mission North District Stadium. Standard Parking will be on hand to help direct fans entering and leaving the match.

See you guys at the stadium! The Cauldron will be sitting in section "K" on the East side, for those interested in sitting there tonight.

 Open Cup Tomorrow

Hey all, apologies for no posts today, it was a combination of a couple of things. First, our internet was down for most of the day (sucks! now at another establishment stealing wireless internet) and, second, I wanted TJ's post to stay top for as long as possible. SF gave us a little love for the project on The Offside Rules. Thanks to him! Patronize his site often; he has some seriously funny stuff.

For those of you not able to attend the Open Cup play-in game tomorrow against Colorado at 7 p.m. at Shawnee Mission North District Stadium ($20 for non season ticket holders, members of the SMSD get a special discount they should already know about), we will do a live running commentary again here at Hillcrest Road. Check it out if you're around a computer but can't make it to the stadium.

 Help us Help Others

TJ Widbin, an extraordinary 20-year-old from Iowa has been helping bring soccer to the lives of young Kenyans for the last couple of years though his program, Kicks4Kenya. We at the Wizards have been fortunate enough to help TJ out along the way, and would like to do so again. At the present time, TJ is not going to be able to make a trip to Kenya this year due to a lack of funds. TJ informs us it would not cost him very much, but he has been unable, thus far, to round up the funds. In order to help out this incredible young person with this incredible task, we ask that you send modest donations to us in TJ's name. We will then relay the funds and other donations (balls, jerseys etc) to him for his trip. Thanks in advance to all you generous souls out there. We and TJ REALLY appreciate the help.

TJ with a team and a Wizards soccer ball from his trip to Kenya last summer.

Hillcrest Road: Why did you start this project that has now included multiple trips to Africa?
TJ Widbin: During my first trip to Kenya in 2005, I did not go with the intent to bring soccer balls and equipment for the kids. I was a pretty naïve 17-year-old who didn't even know they liked soccer. When I got over there though, I quickly found out they didn't like soccer, but they lived for it. I noticed though that none of the kids played with real soccer balls. They played with paper sacks tied together with rope or string. I couldn't talk with the kids because of the language barrier, but soccer broke that barrier as we could all play no matter what language we spoke. So I fell in love with soccer just for the fact that it broke down walls that were there. When I got back home, I decided I wanted to do more in Africa that was soccer related because it was so huge over there, but nobody had balls or anything. I thought to myself "I can’t get rid of poverty, but I can get them a soccer ball." So I started looking on the internet for groups that did work in Africa through soccer but the cost was like $5000 for a month. Since I don’t have that kind of money I decided to start Kicks4Kenya and do it on my own. Now here we are.

HR: How did you go about taking care of the logistics of such a massive project?
TJ: The internet is a fantastic thing. I probably sent more emails out in the 3 months before I left than in my entire life. I started out talking with the owner of the orphanage I stayed at in 2005, and just worked from there. He gave me the e-mail of his friend that likes soccer, and then I got e-mails of principals that wanted to start soccer teams at their schools. So before we left we had an idea of how many schools and orphanages we were going to, and that helped out a lot. As far as when I was over there, we just went day by day. We stayed at a baby orphanage for a week or so then went to a different orphanage. It was through a lot of emails and a lot of luck that things just fell into place.

HR: Were you nervous before your first trip?
TJ: I was never really nervous before the trip. I think the thing I was most nervous about was the food. I’m a picky eater and I knew I wouldn't get steak and fries there. As far as being nervous for my safety, I was pretty calm.

HR: How did those feelings change on subsequent trips?
TJ: Before I left last summer, I was so excited. I couldn't wait to get back over there! I was still nervous about the food but knew a little bit more what to expect. As I talk to you now, I wish I could just hop on a plane and get over there. Africa does that to you. Someone told me in the airport before we headed back that once you get to Africa, your heart will always be split in two. You will always want to go back.

HR: What is the most rewarding aspect of your work since starting Kicks4Kenya?
TJ: Life in Kenya is different than life in the states, especially for the kids. In the U.S., a kid only worries about like when he can play or what he will have for dinner. A kid in Kenya has to worry about if they will even make it home from school, or if they will even get a dinner that night. So with all these things to worry about, they don’t really have time to just be kids and have fun. So when they get to play soccer they can be kids; that is their escape. So the most rewarding thing is just being able to give them that escape, but at the same time allowing them to do it with real balls and not just plastic sacks or rocks. It is really cool to see the smile on a kid’s face when you give them a soccer ball. Its like you gave them the world.

HR: How did you first decide to contact the Wizards?
TJ: When I decided to start Kicks4Kenya my goal was to get a few soccer balls to take over. I really had no big picture in mind; I just wanted a few balls. I e-mailed the Wizards and the Chicago Fire because they were the two closest MLS teams to me. I also e-mailed the University of Iowa for help. If I was to get an answer, I expected it to be in a few weeks. An hour after I sent out the email Erin Lawless sent me one back and we just started talking and it took off from there. She has been awesome with helping me out with the project. Actually, everyone involved with the Wizards has been awesome.

HR: Has working with a professional team added to the impact on the children in Africa?
TJ: When we were handing out the balls a lot of the kids asked what the logo on the balls were. I told them that they were from a professional team in the U.S. called the Wizards and that was their team logo. Although they didn't know who the Wizards were, I think that just knowing that a professional soccer team was helping them really meant a lot to them.

HR: What are your future goals with Kicks4Kenya?
TJ: It’s kind of funny what some of my goals are now because when I first started I just wanted a few soccer balls. Now I see what is possible and that things can be done. Eventually, I would like to build a permanent base in Kenya with a soccer complex. Sort of like what a rec-plex would be here. A place with good fields in which we could have tournaments and just have kids come and have a safe time. I would love to see it get to the point where we have league teams in Kenya (like U-15's or that sort of thing), and then have other traveling teams come and compete against the teams we have worked with in Kenya. Then, while they are there, to have them work in the communities to make them a better place--use soccer to help change Kenya. It’s a big goal, but I think that would be awesome. I would like to live in Kenya one day, so the thought of having an orphanage and soccer complex is just awesome. For the short term, I would like to build a soccer field in Nakuru, Kenya, so that the schools there could compete against one another. I also want to start raising money for mosquito nets since Malaria is such a deadly disease. Of course we also need more soccer balls. :)

HR: How can Kansas City fans help you reach those goals?
TJ: The best way to help is financially. Last summer we took balls and jerseys over in our luggage, but that only works for a small-scale project. If we want to start doing things in a larger scale, which we would like to do, then we need to be able to buy the balls and things over there and deliver them. Of course if someone offers a ball we certainly won't reject it. We need all of those we can get also.
