 Order Your Copy Today

So I'm sitting at my desk when a delivery guy walks in asking for a signature. I oblige, as always, then look at the two boxes sitting near the reception area. Hmm, I think, I have no idea what these might be. After looking at the shipping label "SonyDist Terra Haute, IN", I still had no idea. So I open the the case and see:
BAM!

Ahh, I think, this is for Jacques. So I wander into office of merchandising guru Jacques Tournoy with the boxes, and he gets excited. "They're here already?" he asks. So Jacques is all jacked up and goes into the ten minute spiel about how awesome MLS Gamebreakers was: "This is our version of NFL Films," he tells me. So now I'm excited. I haven't seen either video yet, but word on the street (well, in the office) is that they're about as sweet as peeps on Easter morning. Go buy MLS Gamebreakers here (featuring our own Jimmy Conrad) and pre-order History of the MLS Cup here at kcsoccerstore.com (or by clicking the image above). History of Cup won't be shipped until September 29, but it is surely a great holiday gift for any Wizards fans who remember the glorious run in 2000 (Including all 35 minutes of stoppage time). I think I know what I'm doing this weekend now.

 Hartman Pumps up Boots

Wizards 'keeper Kevin Hartman sat down with Kurt Kloeblen of Sun Publications (The Johnson County Sun) yesterday after practice for a feature story on Kevin's book Boots Saves the Day. Kurt's story will come out next Wednesday, so check it out if you get the Sun or can get your hands on a copy of it. Remember, Kevin's children's book is available currently at kcsoccerstore.com through this link.

 Harrington Gets Some Love

Gareth Maher over at Setanta sports' website listed XI MLS players capable of playing in the English Premier League. The usual suspects for this type of list (Michael Parkhust, Sacha Kljestan, Taylor Twellman) were there, but listed 3rd and featured in the photo at the top were our own left back/ right mid Michael Harrington. Congrats on being noticed, friend, but how about you stick around a while? Read the story.

 Conrad and Arnaud Show

This week, The Jimmy Conrad Show will take on a new look, as usual play-by-play voice Sean Wheelock will be out of commission. In his absence, Conrad's usual fill-in Davy Arnaud will join
Captain Kansas City for a little footie banter. Head down to McFadden's in the Power and Light District for the show from 7-8, or listen to it live at kcwizards.com or MLSnet.com. Enjoy; these two are pretty funny when they mix it up.

 Feel-Good News/Funny Transfer Story

It seems that headlines of athletes and other stars screwing up are often above the fold but praise of good efforts are buried near the back of the paper. Here's a story from a few weeks back from a mother of an autistic child who participated in a clinic put on by Jimmy Conrad, Kerry Zavagnin, Davy Arnaud and Ryan McMahen. Read and enjoy.

In a totally different frame of mine, check out this story that gives new meaning to the phrase "traded for a bag of potato chips."

Wizards and Irish Fest, Year II

For the second straight year, the Wizards will partner with the Kansas City Irish Festival, coming up next weekend at Crown Center. Some Irish-Fest themed events will take place at our match tomorrow night. The Gaelic Athletic Association will be out in a tent, showing off the sport of "hurling" for all to see. This will be out by the playground area on the South side of CAB. A Starting 11 Girl will model our new "Wizards Irish" T-shirt that will be on sale next weekend at our Irish Fest tent, and we will play some Irish music over the PA. Enjoy the Irish-themed festivities tomorrow, then come see us next Saturday at the Irish Fest for some good times celebrating heritage from the Emerald Isle. (No Wizards of Oz references, please.)

Last year was a blast, so make sure to come visit our tent Labor Day weekend! For more info on the event, click here.

 International Update

How about U.S. Soccer in the last two days? It wasn't pretty, but our boys earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Guatemala on the road, the first win there since 1988 and the first-ever win in Guatemala during World Cup Qualifying. Then, the U.S. women defeated Brazil 1-0 this morning in extra time to win their third gold medal in four tries since the Olympics added women's soccer in 1996. Very nice.

Today, Sr. Claudio Lopez was the press conference participant over at the Swope Park Training Center. Check out www.backpost.net for some pictures from Thad. Claudio got cheery when discussing tomorrow's big match between Nigeria and his native Argentina in the Olympic men's title match. Look in various news outlets for some comments from Lopez. I wonder who he's cheering for.

 Wizards Beer Update

Hey there, just got an update from Exec VP Greg Cotton on the Wizards-specific beer that the fine folks of Weston Brewing Company have helped us create. Cotton and Experience Development guru (read: dude that makes sure fans have fun at the stadium and at our events) Adam Meloan went up to meet with the WBC peoples last week with good results. The yet-to-be-named Wizards Ale has been a hit at their pub in Weston. Everyone has loved it, and they've already gone through about 600 gallons of the stuff.

The beer (once named, of course) is scheduled to be available at retailers this fall, possibly before the end of the season. Current plans call for a percentage of the proceeds on each sale to go to Kansas City Soccer Foundation. Wouldn't that be neat? I know what kind of beer I'll be serving at my next get together!

 Reserves Story

Coach Kelderman meets with the reserves before beating D.C. 4-2

Our friend Bob Luder of the KC Star checked in today with a story on our reserve squad and their success so far this season. Read it here, then click on the tag below for "KCW Reserves" to re-live some of the match recaps. Also in Bob's story is a link to an interesting one about our Technical Director PV. Glad you stayed, friend.

Boots Saves the Day FOR SALE

Greetings all, just wanted to stop in and let you know about the latest book for your Kansas City Wizards reading library. As many of you know, goalkeeper Kevin Hartman penned a children's book about a fearless young feline, Boots, who becomes a star-caliber goalkeeper in spite of many odds.

Well, your chance to own this fun piece of children's literature is here. The book is available at CommunityAmerica Ballpark on game days and is now also available at www.kcsoccerstore.com. Check out this link and pick up your copy of the book for $9.99. It's a fun one, believe me.

Kevin has already done two readings of the book and will do several more throughout the fall. We'll keep you posted.

 Welcome Back

Note: Attempted posting this yesterday before leaving Colorado, but Blogger held me up for some reason. Here's what I said...extra apologies now for the lack of posts.

Apologies for the lack of posts over the last two days. Friday, travel kept me busy and there were technical difficulties last night. Tough one to lose yesterday, as Conor Casey turned in an excellent performance for the Rapids. Props to the twenty plus Cauldronites who made the trip and produced more noise than the Colorado supporters' sections. Well done, friends. We head back to KC today, and the Starting 11 have the day off tomorrow. Those who didn't start will take part in a reserve friendly against Michael Kraus' alma mater, Creighton, tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. at our gorgeous Swope Park Training Center. Come out and see the match, if you can find time out of your Monday work schedule.

(On a side note, Hillcrest just watched a quarterfinal water polo match between Italy and the Netherlands. You think stopping PKs in soccer is hard? This match went to a penalty shot shootout. Wow, now that was not easy for the goaltenders.)

Check out below for some notables on last night's match and kcwizards.com for quotes.

· Following the match, Kansas City sits 6-7-7, 25 pts. in a tie for 5th place tie in the Eastern Conference with the New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC, who meet one another Sunday afternoon in New York.
· The Wizards are now 19-16-8 all-time in the regular season against Colorado, including a 4-13-5 mark on the road.
· Kansas City is now 3-2-4 in its last nine matches.
· The Wizards concluded the season 1-1-0 against Colorado in MLS play and 2-1-0 in all competitions.
· Kansas City is 3-1-2 against the Rapids in their last six match-ups.
· Colorado last won July 8, 2006.
· Goalkeeper Kevin Hartman and defender Jimmy Conrad are the only Wizards to play all 1800 minutes so far this season.
· Midfielder Michael Harrington recorded his first goal of the season in the 44th minute.
· Harrington now has four career goals.
· Harrington’s tally came off a rebound, the Wizards first rebound goal of the season.
· He is the 10th Wizards player to score a goal this season.
· Hartman recorded five saves on the night to reach 1099-career stops.
· With his next save, Hartman will become just the second goalkeeper in MLS history to surpass 1100 stops.
· Hartman trails only former Wizards goalkeeper Tony Meola on the all-time MLS saves list.
· Meola retired with 1136 stops.
· Hartman needs just 37 saves over the final 10 matches to reach Meola’s mark. He has averaged over 4 saves/game this season.
· Hartman finished the game with 26,235 career minutes played, just seven minutes short of former Wizards midfielder and coach Chris Henderson for second place on the all-time MLS list.

Galaxy Tickets on Sale Tomorrow at 10 AM

Captain Kansas City and Captain England teamed up last month at BMO Field. They'll be facing off Sept. 13 at Arrowhead.

Alright guys, the moment teeny-boppers and soccer moms alike have been waiting for. Sr. David Beckham will be making his first-ever appearance in Kansas City (injury, yellow-card suspension and a bunch of other things permitting, of course). Beckham and our Captain Kansas City teamed up recently on the MLS All-Star team that beat West Ham United of the English Premier League last month.

The game will be played Saturday, September 13 at 4 p.m. CT at Arrowhead Stadium. Tickets start at $30 for lower-bowl seats ($25 if you're a Season Ticket Holder, $35 on game day if you don't purchase in advance). Club seats are $45 in advance ($40 for Season Ticket Holders, $50 walk-up). We also have a special VIP pre-game party that includes club-level seats and all-inclusive food and drink (featuring signature Kansas City barbeque) for $100.

Up for something a little more unique? Check out our auctions here and here for specialty items that include, among other things, singing the National Anthem, being a Ball Kid or a Walk of Champions participant or some front-row seats and on-field passes. No, we can't offer a Beckham autograph (or one from anyone else) while you're on the field, but that camera phone will get some pretty sweet pics.

If you run one of those swanky businesses that likes to wine and dine clients, call in and inquire about the suites we have left. Some for groups as small as 18, some for groups as large as 68. There aren't a lot left, so call in fast 913.387.3400.

 Zavagnin Announces Retirement

Hey there, just wanted to drop you a note and let you know that midfielder Kerry Zavagnin, holder of the team's all-time games played and minutes played records, told the crew at the weekly press conference today he would hang them up after the season. Read Bob Luder's brief summary here. It should be updated later this evening. (Also, don't people get tired of posting hateful comments just for fun. They can't be that bored, can they?)

Also, for all you non-season-ticket-holders out there, LA Galaxy tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10 a.m. through our website, by calling 913.387.3400 or through any Ticketmaster outlet. Will be back later with pricing and further details. The game, as you probably know, will be played at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday, September 13 at 4 p.m. CT. The game was moved up three hours because the Chiefs play a home game the next day and will need time to clean and convert the stadium.

 Welcome Thad

Hillcrest Road would like to welcome Thad Bell and his blog, The Back Post, to the KC Wizards blogroll. Thad has been running The Back Post for a couple of months now, and I have been remiss in not giving him props before. Thad comes out to practice pretty regularly and snaps some very good pictures. Jump on over to www.backpost.net and read his stuff. He did an interview with Davy Arnaud yesterday that includes some pretty good questions, some of which were submitted by you, the fans.

Read up on Thad's site. He comes to practice often.

Hartman PSA for Kicks 4 Kenya

Check out the PSA below done by our goalie Kevin Hartman for Kicks 4 Kenya, one of Hillcrest Road's favorite charities. Read our QnA with TJ Widbin, K4K's founder, here from a month or so ago. Check out TJ's blog here. Donate some money to TJ. He really has a good cause and is doing great things for some kids over there.

 Crashing the Cauldron Flipbook

Thanks to team photog Scott Pribyl for the excellent series of photos after Sasha Victorine's opening goal last Saturday. Alex the intern, he of the excellent reports from the KCW Juniors U-19 trip to Little Rock, took the photos, played with them in iMovie and turned out the following modern-day flipbook. Watch and enjoy.

 Vermes on Public Radio

Busy day here at Hillcrest huh! Technical Director Peter Vermes stopped by local NPR station KCUR 89.3 this morning for a long chat about soccer. Keegan Pierce, press officer for Chivas USA, highlights the soccer hour for the first 7-10 minutes talking about our game against Chivas USA and the differences between MLS and Mexico, then Vermes sticks around for the rest of the time.

Forgive the host for a little lack of soccer knowledge, but PV provides some pretty good insights and opinions along the way.

Link (give the page a couple of minutes to load).

 Onalfo's Story

Pete Grathoff of the KC Star checked in Sunday with his version of Coach Onalfo's battle with Hodgkin's Disease back in 1993-1994. Pete did a great job, with many insightful comments from coach and his mother and quite a few "smile moments". Enjoy.

 Sasha up for GOTW

Sasha Victorine's pretty diving header goal to open the scoring Saturday evening has been nominated for the Sierra Mist Goal of the Week award. Go vote here.

 Reserves Win Exhibition

One night after the first team got back to its winning ways with a 3-2 win over Chivas USA, the reserve squad took on a group of local college players with much success. The reserves won 4-0, on goals from Espinoza, Marinelli, Kraus and Pizarro. Jonathan Leathers left the game early in the first half and colliding with an opponent and cutting his head.

Lineup: Pardo, Myers, Leathers (McKenzie 23), Wahl, Watson, Pizarro, McMahen (Marinelli 46), Morsink (Souter 46), Espinoza, Pore (Kraus 46), Trujillo (guest player #28 46)

Scoring: 15th minute-Trujillo took a ball at the top of the penalty area and fed ahead to Pore on the right side of the area. The goalkeeper was forced to play Pore, and he slid a ball across for Espinoza for an easy finish from close range.

52nd minute- Marinelli collected a ball about 22 yards out in the center of the field and beat the goalkeeper at the back post for a 2-0 lead.

56th minute- Guest player (sorry don't have his info) cut in behind the defense and lofted a ball to Kraus just inside the PK spot. Kraus turned athletically and hit a nice side-volley into the back of the net.

66th minute- Marinelli collected a loose ball in midfield, spun it ahead between two defenders with the outside of his foot for Kraus who turned and fed into space for Pizarro up the right flank. Pizarro took a touch then buried the ball inside the back post for the final 4-0 score line.

I ran into Matt Marquess' parents today at the match. Apparently they read Hillcrest Road often. Thanks for reading, and nice chatting with you! Your son did very well for himself in his first career start last night.

 Wizards/Ajax

It was brought to my attention today that our lovely blue home kits look strikingly similar to the 08-09 away kit for Dutch powerhouse Ajax. Take a look, and tell us what you think. Take away the yellow, and it's a match.

 Practice Fun

Stopped by training today for a little look at the guys before tomorrow's important match against Chivas USA. The session went well, with the starting group knocking the ball around and working on crosses. The reserves participated in 7-v-7 matches on a small field. Technical Director Peter Vermes and Coach Onalfo were involved, with their two teams squaring off in the final. After training, captain Kansas City and fellow veteran Kerry Zavagnin snagged a water jug and dumped it on Head Athletic Trainer Chet North, as it was Chet's birthday today. PV kept the guys in a huddle just long enough for the chilly b-day present. See pics below.

Coach Onalfo trains during the session. His green team ended up winning the final 1-0 over Peter Vermes' orange team.

Defender Jimmy Conrad and midfielder Kerry Zavagnin hold a walking Gatorade ad and advance toward trainer Chet North as team President Robb Heineman looks on.

Chet was just minding his own business.

Until....

Splash down.

I heard it was cold.

Have a look at Chet's assistant, Kenny Ishii, second from the left in blue. He was enjoying watching his boss get doused.

Then PV got in on the fun.

Happy Birthday Chet.

 Reserve Match Sunday

After whooping on D.C.'s reserve team last weekend, the League-leading KCW Reserves will take on a group of local collegiate players (not only kids from Rockhurst) in a reserve-team friendly Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Wizards' Swope Park Training Center. This season, we are 4-0-0 in reserve-team friendlies and have outscored our opponents 21-1 in the process. See you at Swope Sunday morning.

 Media Rumblings

Hello all, this is a day or so late, but I wanted to address the editorial posted by Mike Kuhn over at his fan blog Down the Byline. Check out the full article here. First of all, we'd like to thank Mike and the rest of our fans for caring. Obviously we appreciate the support of all of our fans and want you all to be vocal about issues like this. Next, I'd like to say that the only way to affect change is to contact the right people at the Kansas City Star and the local TV stations.

In the PR department, we are always striving for more and better coverage, though we appreciate all that the Star does. The Star provides a bylined story for each game, home or away, and stories about the Wizards are often atop Page 3 in the sports section, a very good place. If that is not enough for you, the best thing a fan can do is to contact the Star directly and ask for what you desire. Newspapers are very cognizant of their readers' needs and will almost always respond favorably if a large enough block of people make their wishes known.

I will provide the contact info of the correct decision-makers at the Star and local TV stations below. Emails are great. Phone calls are worth more than emails, and hand-written notes/letters make a much higher impact than phone calls.

 Met Some Fans

So this was a couple of days ago now, but I had to make sure I had the facts straight. This Sunday after our 4-2 Reserve Division thumping of D.C., I ventured out of the team hotel to find some food. As I exited, I spotted rookies Jonathan Leathers, Matt Marquess and Rauwshan McKenzie hanging outside a restaurant across the street. As the nosy one that I am, I sauntered over to see what was up. It turns out that the three defenders were heading to lunch with some of Rauwshan's family, and I was invited.

What a lunch it was! We had some excellent Chinese, some wonderful conversation with the McKenzie crew, some good people watching out the restaurant window and quite a few laughs. It turns out that Mrs. Donna McKenzie is quite the blog connoisseur. Not only does she read Hillcrest Road frequently, but she googled her son and found this fun pic of him over at The Offside Rules. Watch out SF, Mrs. McKenzie has her eyes on you!

Anyway, Donna and her also-jovial husband Marc were kind enough to pick up the tab for all involved, as long as I posted about the evening on Hillcrest. Well, I was going to anyway, but that was quite the nice surprise! Here you go McKenzie family. It was a pleasure to meet you!

Marc, Donna and Rauwshan McKenzie. Bet you didn't know you were going to be pictured, Donna.

 Reserves Top United's 4-2

Our reserve squad turned in an impressive performance today against D.C. United's, winning 4-2 at the RFK Auxiliary Field. Below is a write-up from DCU's press dude Kyle Sheldon. He summed it up pretty well, so I won't try to squeeze it in before catching the bus to the airport. Note: Souter's goal was an absolute BOMB to start the second half. We could have added three or four more in the second half that we pretty much dominated until the final 15 minutes.

The D.C. United reserves fell 4-2 to the visiting Kansas City reserves at the D.C. United training complex Sunday morning. Goals from four different Wizards players were the difference as the Reserve Division leaders increased their first place standing over second place United.

Though the first half saw fairly even play throughout, it was Kansas City who got off several long range shots, as Ivan Trujillo, Ryan McMahen and Ryan Pore each tried their luck from distance. United’s best chance – and only shot on goal – of the first half came when Jeremy Barlow collected the ball 25 yards from goal, turned and struck a bending shot that fell fairly easily into the hands of goalkeeper Eric Kronberg.

With just a minute left in the half, a defensive turnover led to Nelson Pizarro being put behind the defense alone. A recovering Mike Zaher made contact with the KC forward from behind sending Pizarro to the ground. The referee’s quick whistle indicated a penalty kick for the visitors, which Ryan Pore calmly stuck in the lower left corner as goalkeeper James Thorpe guessed incorrectly.

The second half saw the Wizards increase their lead to 4-0 within the half’s first twenty minutes. Substitute Kevin Souter put an immediate stamp on the game when he sliced from right to left and struck a bending shot to the far post in the 49th. Three minutes later, Pore collected a loose ball and slid down the center of the field untouched before pushing a square ball to a waiting Trujillo eight yards from goal for an easy put away. The visitors’ final tally of the day came in the 63rd minute when a defensive breakdown led to an odd-man rush. On the right side of the field Michael Kraus fed Trujillo centrally who then fed the ball left to a wide open Lance Watson. The midfielder drew one defender, but cut the ball back onto his left before finishing.

United fought back down the stretch, tallying two late goals. The first came when midfielder Craig Thompson sent a ball from the right side into the goal box. The ball careened off the head of Jeremy Barlow and a Wizards defender and fell to the foot of Quavas Kirk who collected and fired to the far post from eight yards. Three minutes from time, Ryan Cordeiro sent a long diagonal ball to a sprinting Rod Dyachenko. The second half sub collected the ball, sent it between a Wizards defender’s leg and then finished at the near post for the final score of the evening. A Kansas City handball in the penalty area gave D.C. a chance to get within one, but Cordeiro slipped and sent the ball over the bar in the game’s final minute.

The loss moves United’s record to 4-3-1 (13 points) in the Reserve Division, while the Wizards improve to 5-1-2 (17 points).

Wizards @ United Game Day #18

Greetings from RFK Stadium, home of D.C. United. The stadium is old but comfy for the home side usually, but they've struggled recently at home.

Will Daniel is in town for this match again. If you don't recall a story from earlier this year, check it out here. Daniel first met Jimmy Conrad back in 1997 when Conrad was a member of UCLA's NCAA Final 4 team. Daniel, a young man with Down's Syndrome, has stayed close with Jimmy and some other members of that team (including Sasha Victorine) ever since. I ran into him and his mother, Pat, at the team hotel, and both referred to me as "the blog man". I'll take that as a compliment.

Our team hotel, supposedly a former mental hospital, is haunted. Lance Watson claims to have heard whispers in his room last night and his door mysteriously opened this morning while no one was touching it. Weird stuff.

Got out for some sightseeing today. I've been to D.C. before, but never seen the White House, so that was kind of neat. Saw a few pick-up soccer games on the National Mall, also cool.

Unfortunately Josh Wolff's hamstring strain will keep him out tonight. Pore replaces him in the starting lineup up front, and Matt Marquess will make his first appearance in the 18-man roster this season. Nelson Pizarro is back in the 18 after making his MLS debut last week.

Lineups:
KCW-Hartman, Jewsbury, Hohlbein, Conrad, Harrington, Lopez, Morsink, Victorine, Espinoza, Pore, Arnaud

subs- Kronberg, Myers, Wahl, Marquess, Zavagnin, Pizarro, Trujillo

DCU-Wells, Namoff, Carroll, McTavish, Burch, Fred, Simms, Vide, Guerrero, Emilio, Moreno

subs-Thorpe, Zaher, Cordeiro, Murphy, Thompson, Dyachenko, Kirk

 Interns Wanted

Hey everyone, if you know any college-aged students who attend a school in the KC area and might want a fall internship, we still have a few spots available. We offer internships for class credit only, so don't expect to make a killing working for us in that capacity. On the good side, five current full-time employees (including yours truly) began their Wizards careers as interns, so there is definite upward mobility.

Possible departments:
-Sales
-Public Relations (English and Spanish-speaking)
-Community Relations
-Corporate Partnerships
-Finance
-Operations
-Merchandising

If you're interested, send an email (subject line internships) to krogers@kcwizards.com with a resume and cover letter attached. We'll ask for at least two working days per week and are very flexible. Hope to hear from you soon!

Hillcrest will be on the road trip with the guys today, so the blog will be dead for another day (yesterday was a slow news day). I'll check in with Harrington on his hair suggestions and get some feedback. Also, we've got a nifty new camera, so expect more and better behind-the-scenes photos than usual.
